Withlacoochee Area Residents, Inc.A 501 (c)(3) Corporation. Withlacoochee Area Residents, Inc. was organized in 1984 in response to threats to the quality of life of residents along the lower Withlacoochee River because of unrestrained, deep limerock mining operations in the coastal zone. W.A.R., Inc. actions during this period were instrumental in formulating stipulated agreements that limited the conduct and scope of mining operations. W.A.R., Inc. was also a leader in having the Florida Legislature designate the lower Withlacoochee River an "Outstanding Florida Waterway." During the early 1990s, W.A.R., Inc. assisted the Heatherwood Home Owners Association in removing the threats of mining adjacent to their community. The organization's most recent efforts have focused on herbicide applications that are disrupting the environmental quality of the lower Withlacoochee River below Lake Rousseau; opposition to the proposed large-scale, deep limerock mine proposed for the Gulf Hammock Wildlife Management Area in Levy County, and specific elements of Progress Energy, Florida's proposed Nuclear Power generating facility in Levy County. Our primary focus has been on activities that have a high potential to degrade groundwater and surface water quality which we believe is the most important sustainability issue facing area residents.
